I then started to set up a basic diorama by placing the figures on a styrofoam
base with walls that were cut from florists' green foam. I like to use this stuff
whenever I can, because it's cheaper than Balsa Foam. I very quickly realized that
I needed more support for the base.

And so I glued some walls onto the styrofoam base, thus making the whole base itself
far more sturdy. I used Balsa Foam for the floors, because that was more refined
than the florist foam. Since Indy's legs were sculpted so that he stood on steps,
I sculpted a staircase for him to stand on from Balsa Foam. With the stairs
done, I carved out an entranceway at the top of the steps for Indy to walk in from.

I got a piece of scrap Balsa Foam and laid it across the steps to give the room
a little more character. I then gave the entire place a coat of flat black, over
which I lightly dry-brushed with sand. The dry-brushing brought out the rough
surfaces of the florists foam, as well as the Balsa Foam. I also dry-brushed
some tan in the corners and elsewhere, to try and get a little more color into
the scene.
