Russian T-34 Tank

This is another 1/35 scale kit from Tamyia that I built straight out of the box.

Although the Germans had some pretty impressive tanks with the Tiger and the Panther, the Russians had the scariest, and most effective tank of the war in the T-34. With its thick, sloped armor, the T-34 became a very nasty surprise for the invading German armies. What made the T-34 so effective was that it was easily adaptable--a larger main gun was eventually mounted--and it could traverse all kinds of ground. Another big plus was that the tank could be quickly built. By the end of the war, the Russians had produced about 40,000 of them.

Here, I decided to show my T-34 in action. I put it on a homemade base with a slope. The Russians dismounting are also from Tamyia, sold separately. The Soviet Army did not have any APCs, so the troops simply rode on back of the T-34s as they went into battle. During the dark days of the war for Russia, many of the T-34s were literally driven to the battlefield straight from the factory, usually unpainted with their bare metal exposed. The troops in the field would give them paint jobs, but they normally wouldn't be very good. Here, I tried to show the result of such a rushed paint job by having some of the bare metal (which was silver metallic paint) show through the dark green.
